What does it take to continue making ‘better whetstones’? To overcome the current perception that ‘whetstones are a matter of luck or compatibility,’ let's strive to create even better whetstones, constantly thinking and seeking input from everyone without hesitation. Even if they are slender, thin, or compact, let’s ensure they perform their function as tools with meticulous care. They possess the power to cultivate a spirit of continuous improvement, leading to a more fulfilling sharpening experience for everyone. Let’s care for them cleanly and brightly, expressing gratitude to the predecessors of [Togiyama]. Because of the long history and accumulated expertise, we can enjoy the convenience and abundance we take for granted today. Let’s cherish and protect both the visible and invisible aspects, never forgetting them. To pass on the intangible assets of the whetstone artisans correctly and ensure a happy sharpening life for everyone, let’s continue to create ‘better whetstones.’
This is a collaborative sales product of a Kyoto Prefecture-approved business cooperative association established by multiple whetstone artisan businesses and landowners in the [Togiyama] area, located in the Naraku and Umenohata districts of Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City. To promote local production within the business area, our cooperative centralizes joint forest management, mining, ore selection, and manufacturing, striving to provide more reliable details of origin and ensure quality control. Since the late Heian period, information on the ore deposits has been passed down through the Honma family of Jikoji Temple and, since the early Edo period, through the Yamamoto family. To overcome the anxieties of relying on oral tradition and apprenticeship, we promote joint ownership and mutual support to foster the next generation and ensure the longevity of this traditional industry. While geological information is certainly essential for mining, we burn with the desire to create ‘better whetstones’ every day, constantly thinking, seeking input, and diligently working, so that superior successors and ‘better whetstones’ will continue to emerge.
