How do we continue to create “even better sharpening stones”?
We must be ashamed of the current situation where it is said that “sharpening stones are a matter of luck and compatibility” and think every day, “Let’s create even better sharpening stones.” Let’s ask others without shame.
Even if they are thin, small, or compact, let’s not let our guard down, not cut corners, and perform our duty as tools with care. This is because it possesses the power to cultivate a spirit of improvement that leads to a better sharpening life for everyone.
Let’s express our gratitude to the predecessors of Toiyama and take good care of the stones, keeping them clean and bright. We can enjoy the convenient and fulfilling present that we have now because of the accumulation of efforts that have continued for a long time. Let’s cherish and never forget our gratitude for both visible and invisible things.
Let’s correctly pass on the intangible inner wealth of the stone craftsmen and continue to create “even better sharpening stones” so that everyone can have a happy sharpening life.
This is a jointly sold product by a mining cooperative authorized by Kyoto Prefecture, established by multiple Toiyama landowners and stone craftsmen businesses located in Narutaki and Ume-ga-hata, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, with such thoughts.
In order to produce locally within the business district, the cooperative centralizes joint forest management, mining, ore selection, manufacturing, etc., in order to provide more reliable details of the origin and contribute to quality control.
Information on the mineral deposits, passed down from the Honma family of Jingoji Temple since the late Heian period and the Yamamoto family since the early Edo period, as well as construction techniques and stone forging techniques, have been passed down through oral tradition and apprenticeship. To eliminate these concerns, we promote joint ownership and supplementation to create an environment for nurturing successors and connect to a long-lasting traditional industry.
Geological information is indispensable in mining, but we hope that by burning our hearts every day and thinking and asking everyone, we will steadily accumulate efforts, eventually giving rise to more excellent successors and continuing to create “even better sharpening stones.”
・66 x 179 x 24 mm, 651g. The ink writing can be removed with water washing. If you want to fix it, apply a diluted solution of Ishi-san Hoiku-eki (stone nurturing liquid) at a ratio of 2-4 times with water. It will disappear if you do not apply it with a roller or by dripping and applying it like a blow painting. Ishi-san nurturing can be removed with kerosene.
・A powerfully descending nesting board, perhaps of the “karasuiri” type. While it does not reach the quality of Okudono, it will enhance your satisfaction.
・If you have any requests such as a certificate of origin or handwritten inscription on the side, please contact us.
・The stone tends to be harder and more refined, like black rock juice. Because hardness reduces self-sharpness, you will proceed with sharpening while performing Kumakura-gake (a method of applying a slurry) as needed, depending on your purpose and skill level.
