The PORTRAIT HELIAR 75mm F1.8 is a large-aperture, manual-focus medium telephoto lens exclusively for Sony E-mount cameras, Voigtländer's first full-frame interchangeable lens to feature a spherical aberration control mechanism. It covers the full-frame image circle, and its optical design is optimized for the image sensors of Sony mirrorless cameras. This lens focuses on the relationship between spherical aberration and bokeh, allowing you to arbitrarily control the under- and over-correction levels to create a wide variety of bokeh effects. Despite its three-group, six-element, Helia-type lens construction, it boasts a large f/1.8 maximum aperture. While spherical aberration changes with aperture opening and closing, the new control ring mechanism allows for unprecedented bokeh range. Undercorrected images result in an unclear focal point (soft focus) and flare in highlights. Background bokeh is smooth. Overcorrected images, on the other hand, retain the focal point and produce a harsh background bokeh (bubble bokeh). While these tendencies have been considered defects that should be corrected from the perspective of ideal optical design, this lens was designed and engineered to harness these characteristics for unique photographic expression. While varying spherical aberration naturally shifts the focal point, this issue is addressed by incorporating a mechanism that adjusts the spacing between lens groups in conjunction with the control ring to offset the shift. A small fingertip protrusion is provided where the left thumb would touch when operating the control ring, providing a tactile indication of the approximate correction level. This lens is equipped with electronic contacts, and the lens usage status is reflected in the Exif information of the shooting data. However, it does not rely on the camera's electronic lens aberration correction function, and instead captures the performance of the lens itself in the image. It also has a built-in distance encoder, making it compatible with cameras equipped with 5-axis in-body image stabilization, which uses subject distance information for shift shake correction. It also allows for viewfinder magnification by operating the focus ring. The minimum focusing distance is 0.7m, and focusing is manual focus only. The metal focus ring features a diamond pattern that provides excellent grip in both the forward and backward directions and in the rotational direction. Another feature is the silky feel of the greased high-precision metal helicoid, which can withstand even the most demanding focusing at wide open apertures. The aperture is mechanically controlled via a direct connection to the operating ring and employs nine aperture blades, ensuring a clean, well-defined depiction of out-of-focus areas of point light sources.
