Mizuhiki are made by twisting thin strands of washi paper, applying glue, and letting them dry to harden. Water cleanses all impurities, and after the water recedes, everything becomes refreshing and pure. It is said that the name "mizuhiki" was given to symbolize the giving of a pure and clean gift. New Year's decorations are prepared to welcome and worship the god of the year. In most households, the decorations are put up starting around December 27th (decorating on the 29th is considered unlucky because it sounds like "waiting for hardship," and decorating on the 31st is considered unlucky because it is a "one-night decoration").
