Minwax Antique Furniture Refinisher 946 ml – a preparation for removing traditional furniture coatings
Discover the natural beauty of old wood without aggressive sanding
Minwax Antique Furniture Refinisher is a low-viscosity, amber-colored refinishing preparation designed to dissolve traditional wood coatings: varnish, shellac and lacquer. It works on the finish without damaging the underlying wood.
The formula contains natural wood oils that penetrate the wood and condition the surface while removing the old finish. This makes it ideal for restoring antiques, vintage furniture, and other wooden items requiring precise restoration.
Therefore, it should not be considered a universal remover for all types of finishes. Current Minwax Manufacturer Information

How does Minwax Antique Furniture Refinisher work?
The product dissolves compatible finishes when you wipe the surface with steel wool. The old finish is transferred to the working fluid, which gradually becomes thicker and darker. When the product in the container thickens, replace it with a fresh batch.
A final wipe over the entire surface with clean steel wool and fresh product helps even out the result, remove any remaining dissolved finish, and eliminate visible boundaries between subsequent sections of the work.
The product works directly on the old finish, so there's no need to start the renovation with aggressive sanding, which could damage the veneer, details, or natural surface of the old wood.
What coatings does it dissolve?
• traditional varnishes
• shellac polishes
• lacquers, including many traditional furniture varnishes
• combinations of the above coatings occurring on old furniture
What does the product not remove?
• varnishes and polyurethane coatings
• modern, two-component, highly resistant coatings
• thick layers of enamel
• epoxy coatings
• laminates and plastic veneers
• antique and vintage furniture
• tables, chairs, and desks
• chests of drawers, sideboards, and wardrobes
• drawers and furniture fronts
• wooden frames
• carved decorations and ornaments
• furniture legs and profiled elements
• doors and fragments of interior joinery
• wooden panels and wainscoting

In the case of particularly valuable antiques or furniture with an unknown restoration history, it is worth consulting a professional conservator on how to proceed.
Preparing the Work Area
1. Work outdoors or in an area with very good fresh air circulation.
2. Remove all ignition sources from the room.
3. Turn off burners, pilot lights, heaters, stoves, power tools, and devices that can create sparks.
4. Protect the floor and adjacent surfaces from dissolved finish.
5. Prepare a solvent-resistant metal or glass container.
6. Wear chemical-resistant rubber gloves and tight-fitting safety goggles.
7. Prepare fine 000-grit steel wool and clean cloths.
8. Test in an inconspicuous area to confirm the coating type and evaluate the effect.
Do not use a plastic container unless it has been confirmed to be resistant to strong solvents.
How to use
1. Pour about 4-6 fluid ounces, or approximately 120-180 ml, into a metal or glass container.
2. Dip a piece of fine 000 steel wool into the solution.
3. Gently squeeze out excess liquid, avoiding splashing.
4. Rub the surface using gentle, small circular motions.
5. Continue until the old coating begins to dissolve.
6. Work in small sections to maintain control.
7. If necessary, re-wet the steel wool and repeat.
8. When the working fluid becomes thick with dissolved coating, replace it with fresh fluid.
9. Once the finish has been removed from the entire surface, use clean 000 steel wool and a fresh portion of fluid.
10. Wipe the entire piece again to even out the surface and remove any joint marks.
11. Remove any residue according to the package instructions and allow the wood to dry completely.
12. Before applying a new finish, ensure that all solvents have completely evaporated from the surface.
Further wood finishing
After complete drying, assess the condition of the surface. Depending on the desired effect, the wood can be prepared for:
• varnishing with a compatible product
• application of a colorless protective coating
The natural oils contained in the preparation condition the wood, but do not constitute the final protective layer. After renovation, apply an appropriate finish in line with the intended use of the furniture.
Before using a water-based product or other coating sensitive to solvent residues, ensure that the surface is completely dry and properly prepared.
