3️⃣ Which wheel should I choose?

In addition to ground conditions, load capacity is one of the most important criteria for selecting wheels. To determine the required load capacity, the following variables must be known:

• own weight of the equipment

• maximum load weight or load capacity

• number of wheels that will be used

The wheel must always be in contact with the ground. In practice, this rarely happens due to bumps or uneven ground. As a result, the total load often ends up on three wheels, and the load per wheel increases.

Therefore, the total load must be divided by three wheels instead of four, to achieve a safe load capacity.

When determining the safe total load capacity for a four-wheeled device, we consider the weight of the device plus its maximum load. Divide the sum by 3 to obtain the safe load capacity that should be assumed for one wheel.

In other cases, the load capacities are distributed as follows :

1) 1 swivel caster + 2 fixed casters

Arrangement suitable for small loads. Easily manoeuvrable, but unstable.

2) 4 swivel casters

Easy to maneuver in all directions, but difficult to operate in a straight line.

3) 2 swivel sets + 2 fixed sets

easy to operate in a straight line, but more difficult when changing direction.

4) 4 fixed sets (2 central higher)

Easy to operate in a straight line, easy to maneuver, but unstable.

5) 2 fixed casters + 4 swivel casters

Recommended setup for heavy loads and long vehicles. Easy maneuverability in all directions, as well as good straight-line operation.
