That summer, I spent just one week in the old mansion where my mother grew up. There, I met the little girl my mother had talked about—a Borrower. Living quietly there under the floorboards was Arrietty, a Borrower girl who was about to turn 14, along with her father Pod and her mother Homily. Borrowers living in secret. One summer day, a 12-year-old boy named Sho came to the mansion for recovery from illness. Humans must not see them. If seen, they would have to move. That was the rule of the Borrowers, but Arrietty was seen by Sho. "You are putting your family in danger," her father said, but Arrietty rebelled. "I don't think all humans are that dangerous." Driven by her natural curiosity and reckless personality, Arrietty gradually drew closer to Sho.
