Fuller's Earth is one of Britain's oldest mineral exports, a pale, fine-grained clay with a long history in cloth-making, pharmacy, and, quietly, in the bathroom. The name has nothing to do with a person: it comes from the medieval trade of 'fulling', the process of working raw wool with clay to draw out lanolin and grease. That same absorbent quality is what brought it into skincare, and it has stayed there ever since.

The clay itself

This is a 100% Fuller's Earth powder, sourced and packed in the United Kingdom. The clay is a soft, earthy grey-green in tone, its colour comes from the mineral content rather than any addition. The texture is fine and smooth, closer to kaolin than to the grainier rhassoul or volcanic bentonite, and it mixes easily into a paste without lumps or resistance.

The ritual

Spoon a small amount into a bowl, add water or floral water a little at a time, and stir until you have a paste that holds its shape without cracking.
