A glossy wooden puzzle box shaped like a resting gecko, made for the pleasure of discovering how it opens. It brings a playful, warm-toned presence to a shelf, bedside table or desk, with a hidden space for a little gift, note or keepsake once the sliding sequence is solved.
The gecko in the grain
The low, stretched silhouette gives it a sculptural feel, more like a small wooden creature than an ordinary box.
Incised lines mark the head, limbs and tail, catching the light across the polished surface.
The wood grain runs through the body in warm brown streaks, giving each visible curve a natural depth.
The puzzle opening turns a simple moment into a small ritual: pause, feel the pieces, find the order.
It suits tiny treasures rather than everyday storage, keeping the focus on surprise and discovery.
Sheesham and Saman wood
The box is made from Sheesham wood and Saman wood, with a smooth, polished finish that shows the darker grain beneath. The gecko form is rounded and tactile, with visible cut lines that form part of the puzzle mechanism.
How to open and care for it
Work gently through the moving pieces until the sequence becomes clear. Do not force a section if it resists, as puzzle boxes depend on the right order rather than pressure.
Keep it dry, dust with a soft cloth, and avoid leaving it in damp places. Wood can shift slightly with humidity, so a calm indoor spot is best.
A small puzzle with Indonesian roots
This piece comes from Indonesia and follows the same idea as Indian wooden puzzle boxes, where opening is part of the charm. Instead of a simple lid, the object asks to be handled slowly, with each section tested in turn. The gecko shape adds a light, domestic character: a creature often seen as quick, watchful and at home in warm places. Here it becomes a decorative box with a hidden centre, made less for security than for delight, curiosity and the quiet satisfaction of solving something by touch.
