■ 9th Volume: "Phoenix: Life Chapter/Strange Chapter"
In "Life Chapter," TV producer Aoi, struggling to win ratings, plans to create cloned humans and have hunters kill them in an attempt to revive his show's popularity. He is punished by the "birds" for his disregard for life. Also included is "Strange Chapter," a story of "reincarnation" involving the eternal cycle of death and rebirth, centered around Sakonsuke, the daughter of a cruel feudal lord and raised as a boy, and Yaobikuni, a nun of Horai Temple, set in late 7th-century Japan. Despite the different motifs, the story revolves around the consistent themes of "Phoenix"—views of life and satire.
