The Mount Haguro Five-Story Pagoda stands amid a cedar grove in the mountains of Mount Haguro, Temmuke, Haguro-cho, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. It is said to have been built by Taira no Masakado.
It is said to be the oldest five-story pagoda in the Tohoku region and was designated a National Treasure in 1966.
The current pagoda is said to have been rebuilt approximately 600 years ago by Mount Haguro's chief priest, Daihoji Masashi.
The pagoda stands approximately 29.0 meters tall.
Its roof is made of persimmon bark and is three bays and five stories tall, unpainted.
During the Meiji period, Mount Haguro became Dewa Shrine, and the temple was demolished, but the Buddhist-style five-story pagoda remains.
