Mined around 1982 and now considered a valuable natural whetstone. This stone was mined from the sea off Sagamogashima, Toyotama-machi, Shimokita-gun, Nagasaki Prefecture, and has been desalinated for 2.3 to 4.5 years before shipping. Because it is brought up from the sea, it tends to dry easily on land, causing the moisture within the stone to evaporate and resulting in frequent cracks and splits. Mining has ceased, and good-condition Tsushima whetstones are becoming increasingly rare. This is largely due to the difficulty of proper storage, making it a valuable and rare natural whetstone. It is a finishing stone close to a medium-grit whetstone. It is often used primarily for sharpening scissors. It is also used for surface polishing of natural whetstones, polishing silver products, and bringing out the luster of lacquerware.
