The clams in Kai-awase are considered a symbol of marital harmony because a pair of clam shells can never be matched with any other. Kai-awase involves painting delicate flowers and plants on a pair of clam shells. Players competed to see who could create the most beautiful design and composed poems based on it. It is a popular item for seasonal interior decoration and makes a wonderful gift for weddings and births.
