Double Bass in a 3-Way System

SHX Series – greater dynamics and higher efficiency

Excursion SHX sets were created as a more advanced alternative to entry-level speaker systems. Compared to the lower-end SX series, they offer a more mature, dynamic sound character and higher efficiency.

SHX woofers have an impedance of 3 Ohms. This allows them to more effectively utilize the amplifier's power. In the dB version, two woofers can be connected in parallel in one channel, achieving very powerful and dynamic bass reproduction.

SHX-6M Woofers – Four 165 mm Drivers

The set includes four SHX-6M woofers with a diameter of 165 mm. Their diaphragms are made of a 2-layer composite of paper, natural wool, and glass fiber. This construction is light, stiff, and well-damped.

The lower mass of the diaphragm improves the speaker's response. This results in more detailed midrange tones, and a better bass foundation. After a break-in period, the set can reveal an even fuller and more dynamic character.

The woofers have an LXPD dust cap in the style of a phase plug. This improves sound resolution at a wider listening angle, which is especially important for low-mounted door speakers.

EFF Magnet System and Effective Cooling

SHX-6M woofers utilize the EFF (Efficient Flux Field) magnet system. It is more powerful than standard solutions in this class and features a central hole that aids voice coil cooling and lowers the resonance frequency.

Possible Connection Methods

In a set with four woofers, two connection options are available. In the first option, a pair of woofers connected in parallel is powered by a common LPF filter from a single SHX-2WX crossover. The second pair operates in the same manner.

In the second option, each woofer is powered independently by a separate LPF filter from four SHX-2WX crossovers. This option is more neutral sonically because the 3 Ohm impedance of each woofer connected to a separate crossover does not change the LPF crossover point.

In both variants, the SX-SAT mid-range/tweeter system should be powered by two separate SX-2WX crossovers.

Important Installation Information

Crossovers are essential for the proper operation of the midrange and tweeters. They protect them from signals that are too low in frequency. Connecting these speakers without crossovers can permanently damage the voice coils. Such damage is not covered by the warranty.

Depending on the mounting location, speaker orientation, and distance from the listener, changing the polarity of the midrange or tweeters may help improve response alignment around the crossover point.

Optional Excursion XLR resistive attenuators can be used to reduce the signal level of the midrange or tweeters by 2 to 10 dB. For a 1.5 Ohm configuration, use an appropriate amplifier.
