The Type 41 "Royale" is considered by the automotive industry to be one of the most prestigious and luxurious cars ever produced. Initially built on a scale that could be described as "artisanal" by the automaker Bugatti, only six examples were produced between 1929 and 1933.

Despite its impressive and "monumental" dimensions, it was also equipped with the largest-displacement engine ever built—over 12,000 cc. In fact, Ettore Bugatti's goal was to create a car so prestigious that its sale would be limited to a very narrow, exclusive group of potential customers, including the royal families of the period.

The six "Type 41" examples shared the same chassis and engine, but differed in body configuration. Of the six Royale examples produced, the Coupé Napoléon was the first to be ordered for the chassis. Distinguished by its elegant, two-tone black and blue bodywork and highly desirable velvet interior, it served as Ettore Bugatti's personal car for many years and became an icon of global automotive production.
