Explosion hazard zones
According to the Regulation of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration, the obligation to designate explosion hazard zones rests with Investor, designer, or user deciding on the technological process, as part of the conducted explosion risk assessment.
However, in accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Economy, the obligation to divide spaces at risk of explosion into zones rests with the employer, as part of the conducted explosion risk assessment.
Determining explosion hazard zones is a complex process and requires knowledge of the relevant norms, technical standards, and regulations, between which there are often certain interdependencies, but also discrepancies.
In cases where different guidelines apply simultaneously, it is important to maintain the appropriate hierarchy in their application and consistently stick to the chosen path.
Basically, the classification of explosion hazard zones, taking into account the probability and duration of the occurrence of an explosive atmosphere, is as follows:
• Zone 0 – a space in which an explosive atmosphere containing a mixture of flammable substances in the form of gases, vapors, mists with air, occurs constantly, frequently, or for long periods. periods
• Zone 1 – a space in which an explosive atmosphere containing a mixture of flammable substances in the form of gases, vapours, or mists with air may occasionally occur during normal operation.
• Zone 2 – a space in which an explosive atmosphere containing a mixture of flammable substances in the form of gases, vapours, or mists with air does not occur during normal operation, and if it does occur, it persists for a short period.
• Zone 20 – a space in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in the air occurs continuously, frequently, or for long periods.
• Zone 21 – a space in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in the air may occasionally occur during normal operation.
• Zone 22 – a space in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in the air does not occur during normal operation, and if it does occur, it persists for a short period.
It should be remembered that when classifying explosion hazard zones, and when determining their range, it is necessary to take into account all factors (technical and organizational solutions) that affect the area of occurrence of an explosive atmosphere.
For example, factors reducing the frequency and/or range of occurrence of an explosive atmosphere include:
• using local dust extraction systems
• carrying out cleaning activities
• ensuring appropriate exhaust ventilation
• carrying out leakage checks
• using stationary detection systems
• inertization/neutralization of the explosive atmosphere, etc.
Explosion Hazard Zones – Regulation
The obligation to designate explosion hazard zones is specified in the Regulation of the Minister of Economy of July 8, 2010 (Journal of Laws of 2010, No. 138, item 931). The implementation of this obligation, as specified in the regulations, rests with the investor, designer, or subsequent user of the technological process.
The implementation of this obligation can be outsource to experienced companies specializing in this type of project, such as CORONA Serwis. This is especially true given that it's a complex process requiring knowledge of relevant norms, technical standards, and extensive experience.
