Among camping enthusiasts, particularly those who enjoy survival camping and solo camping, starting fires with a fire striker is becoming increasingly popular. Currently, the mainstream method is the Western technique of scraping magnesium with a fire striker, using a knife to strike the magnesium and generate a large number of sparks. The [Noshoku no Takumi] series enables traditional Japanese fire-starting methods that have continued among common people for approximately 400 years, from the Edo period to the early Showa period. The traditional Japanese method involves scraping a fire striker with a flint, which is the opposite of the Western method of scraping magnesium with a fire striker. And if even a single spark falls into the tinder, an ember will be created. During the Edo period, fire striker artisans painstakingly handcrafted each one by “striking” and “annealing,” but today, even though there are blacksmiths, there are no dedicated fire striker artisans, so they are cut using a press. Currently, five sizes of Danshaku-gata (short-strip) fire strikers are manufactured. The larger the surface area of the iron that can be scraped, the easier it is to ignite the tinder, so larger fire strikers are easier to use, and smaller ones are more difficult to ignite.
