Hairballs are caused by so-called pilobezoars, or hairballs. The structure of a cat's tongue plays a significant role in their formation. It has thousands of tiny hooks on its surface that glide through the fur, detangling it and removing dead hair.
Of course, hygiene isn't the only use for hooks, but in this case, they sometimes work to the cat's detriment. Licked hair gets caught on the hooks, making it impossible to spit them out, so it ends up in the stomach.
The problem is more severe in long-haired cats (e.g., Maine Coons, Persians, Siberians, Ragdolls), shedding cats, and those with a thick undercoat. If everything is functioning properly and the pet is regularly brushed by the owner, the hair is removed with the stool.
Unsuccessful attempts to remove hairballs from the digestive tract usually result in weakness, apathy, loss of appetite, and, in the long run, weight loss. Furthermore, if intestinal obstruction occurs, the cat may suffer from constipation.
This latter condition is very dangerous, as it leads to the release of toxins that pose a direct threat to the animal's life.
Complementary food – snacks for domestic cats
• They contain malt and inulin, which support intestinal function and reduce hairballs. Furthermore, DL-methionine and cranberries support the urinary tract, while yucca reduces unpleasant odors.
• DL-methionine lowers urine pH, helps dissolve existing struvite crystals, and reduces the risk of recurrence.
• Cranberries have antibacterial properties. This anti-adhesive effect of cranberries hinders the colonization of the bladder by bacteria that cause chronic urinary tract infections, such as Escherichia coli.
Antioxidants – neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals and strengthen the immune system.
• Enzymes – active compounds that accelerate reactions in the body.
• Resveratrols – reduce the signs of aging.
• Yucca – its primary benefit is its detoxifying function. Yucca extract cleanses internal organs of toxins. They contribute to the regeneration of the intestinal mucosa, which contributes to the faster renewal of beneficial bacterial flora.
Additionally, yucca has a beneficial effect on the digestive system. It accelerates metabolism, improves digestion, and improves nutrient absorption. Thanks to the detoxified intestines, it facilitates the excretion of toxins from fat cells.
It helps lower blood sugar levels. Inulin improves the taste and consistency of the product and also creates a creamy sensation when eating. It is a natural prebiotic. It improves the functioning of the animal's digestive tract, stimulates positive microflora, supports the immune system, regulates bowel movements, reduces toxic metabolites, and reduces the number of hairballs.
• Taurine - an essential amino acid for cats, which their bodies do not produce. It is a powerful antioxidant and is responsible for the proper functioning of the heart and eyesight. Its deficiency causes significant deterioration of the skin and coat.
• L-carnitine - affects the removal of toxic substances from the body. Ammonia is a toxic compound for the body. It is produced by the metabolism of protein components, neutralized into urea by liver enzymes, and ultimately excreted from the body through the kidneys.
However, L-carnitine helps reduce ammonia levels in the body, thereby protecting tissues and organs from its harmful effects.
• Vitamin C is essential for the formation of collagen, the basic component of the fibers that hold teeth in their sockets.
• Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids - essential, unsaturated fatty acids that an animal's body cannot produce on its own.
• Oat fiber - a source of beta-glucan, which supports the proper functioning of the immune system. It increases intestinal peristalsis, facilitates the formation of fecal masses and the excretion of residual hair.
