Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous substances requires the use of appropriate protective equipment, such as a properly fitted (NIOSH approved) respirator, and proper containment and cleanup.
Wood Preparation Steps: 1. Sand the wood in the direction of the grain, first using 120-grit sandpaper, then finishing with 220-grit sandpaper. This will help the stain absorb evenly. 3. Test stain on an inconspicuous area of the wood to check the color.
3. Wipe off excess stain, working with the wood fibers to blend lighter and darker areas. The longer you wait, the darker/richer the color. 4. To lighten any color, add Minwax® Wood Finish™ color 209 Clear to the stain.
5. To darken the color, apply another coat. DO NOT sand between coats. If you are satisfied with the color, allow it to dry completely before applying a protective topcoat. Product Application Steps: 1.
Apply stain in the direction of the grain with a brush or cloth. 2. Allow the stain to penetrate the wood for 5-15 minutes to achieve the desired color. 3. Remove excess stain with a clean cloth. Wipe in the direction of the grain, blending light and dark areas to achieve a uniform color.
4. To darken the color, apply a second coat after 4-6 hours in the same direction as the first coat. 5. Drying time can be extended by increased humidity, low temperatures, and insufficient ventilation.
6. Finish each project with a clear protective topcoat such as Minwax Fast-Dry Polyurethane or Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish. After at least 8 hours, apply a fast-drying clear finish such as Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane or Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane.
