What is grit #0000 used for?
The #0000 designation indicates a very fine, finishing grit of steel wool. It is much more delicate than wool marked with a lower number of zeros and is intended for work requiring special control.
• applying coating renovation products
• gently leveling dull spots
• working with white marks left by water and warm dishes
• applying waxes and wood conditioners
• caring for profiled and carved elements
Despite its very fine grit, steel wool remains an abrasive material. Incorrect pressure can dull or scratch the delicate coating.
Howard Super Fine Steel Wool #0000 is recommended for:
• wooden furniture
• tables, desks and chests of drawers
• cabinets and furniture fronts
• antiques and period furniture
• doors, frames and moldings
• carved decorations
• surfaces covered with traditional varnish or shellac
• oiled wood
• bare and unfinished wood
• surfaces restored with Howard Restor-A-Finish
• applications of Howard Feed-N-Wax
Do not use on high-gloss surfaces if any dulling is undesirable.
Use with Howard Restor-A-Finish
Steel wool should be used with Only apply Restor-A-Finish when applying with a soft cloth does not provide sufficient effect. It is especially useful for deeper white circles, water marks, oxidation, and light scratches.
How to use
1. Test Restor-A-Finish first with a soft cloth.
2. If a more intensive effect is required, choose a Restor-A-Finish in a color that matches the surface.
3. Perform a steel wool test on an inconspicuous area.
4. Lightly saturate the pad with the preparation – it should not drip.
5. Gently rub the surface only in the direction of the grain.
6. Select the minimum pressure that provides the desired result.
7. Work in a small area.
8. Immediately wipe the surface dry with a clean, soft cloth.
9. Evaluate the result before moving on to the next area.
10. When finished, thoroughly remove all loose steel wool fibers.
Coating hardness may vary. The same pressure that's safe on one surface can dull the surface on another.
Use with Howard Feed-N-Wax
The manufacturer recommends using #0000 wool to apply Feed-N-Wax to oiled and unfinished surfaces. The fine fibers help distribute the product and gently work the surface in the direction of the grain.
How to use
1. Make sure the wood is clean and dry.
2. Test in an inconspicuous area.
3. Saturate the pad with Howard Feed-N-Wax.
4. Spread the product in a back and forth motion, always in the direction of the grain.
5. Cover the surface with an even layer.
6. Leave the product for approximately 20 minutes.
7. Polish the surface dry with a clean, soft cloth.
8. Remove any remaining steel wool fibers.
On finished surfaces, Feed-N-Wax can usually be applied with a soft cloth. The use of steel wool should be preceded by a test.
