"Banko-yaki" originated in the late 1700s near Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture.
In the 1800s, the production of teapots flourished, and in 1979, "Yokkaichi Banko-yaki" was designated as a traditional Japanese craft.
Shidei (Purple Clay) Teapot
・When people think of Banko-yaki teapots, they think of the "Shidei (purple clay) teapot." The local red clay is rich in iron, which absorbs the bitterness of green tea and brings out its umami (savory) components.
・Banko-yaki "Shidei" teapots are made using an unglazed firing process (reduction firing), so the more you use them, the more they develop a luster and depth of character.
・Along with Tokoname-yaki (Aichi Prefecture), Banko-yaki teapots are one of the two major brands of Japanese teapot craftsmanship.
・Banko-yaki teapots are supported by many enthusiasts for their unique style: lightweight, rustic, and compact.

[Red Clay] The red clay used for Shidei teapots is rich in iron, which absorbs the bitterness of green tea and brings out its umami components. When red clay is fired at high temperatures, it changes to a unique purplish color.
