Hirota Glass Cold Tea Glasses, Set of 5, Taisho Romance Glass, TR-5002

[Taisho Romantic Glass] The opal glass (sapphire) technique was a popular molding method during the Meiji and Taisho periods, and is exemplified by the "shaved ice cups" recently seen in antique shops.

Using glass containing a special ingredient called bone ash, the technique utilizes the property of developing an opalescent color when subjected to rapid temperature changes, beautifully revealing various traditional Japanese patterns.

This glass evokes the sophisticated Japanese culture of the Taisho era and the subsequent modernization.
