"They lived together." In an era of rampant nationalism, soldiers of the kingdom are about to head to the battlefield. Flowers adorn their guns as they march amidst cheers. A sorcerer, rumored to consume the hearts of beautiful women, appears in the wasteland, along with Howl's Moving Castle. Away from such a town walks a girl. The protagonist Sophie is 18 years old. She was born and raised in a town at the foot of the wasteland, managing her late father's hat shop. Her sister Lettie is charming and sociable, the star of the town's café, Chezari. Sophie is asked by her sister, "Do you really want to be a hat maker?" However, earnest Sophie can only work diligently. Occasionally alone, she ponders what she truly wants to do. One day, Sophie meets a handsome young man, Howl, in the town. The young man, seemingly being chased, suddenly lifts Sophie into the sky for a brief aerial stroll. Captivated by this dreamlike event, Sophie is cursed that night by a witch claiming to be the Witch of the Wasteland, transforming her into a 90-year-old woman. Unable to stay at home like this, Sophie packs her belongings and heads to the remote wasteland, sneaking into Howl's Moving Castle.
