In 1983, Casio launched the shock-resistant G-SHOCK watch. This product shattered the notion that watches are fragile jewelry that needs to be handled carefully, and was the result of Casio engineers' challenge to create the world's toughest watch. With a triple-layer protection design for its parts, module, and case, the G-SHOCK offered a fundamentally new type of watch that was unaffected by strong shocks and vibrations. Its practicality was quickly recognized, and its unique appearance, embodying its functionality, became incredibly popular, leading to explosive sales in the early 1990s. Soon after, the G-SHOCK incorporated various new sensors, solar-powered radio wave technology (see below), and new materials to further improve its durability. By constantly adopting the latest technology and transcending conventional notions of watches, the G-SHOCK brand has become Casio's flagship watch product.
