(THE SKATALITES, ROLAND ALPHONS, JACKIE MITTOO etc...) / SKA SHOTS (LP) A remarkable compilation of rare recordings by The Skatalites! Known for its archival reissues of rare and high-quality reggae/dub sources, the prestigious Pressure Sounds has beautifully compiled rare recordings of The Skatalites that document an important moment in Jamaican cultural history, coinciding with the birth of Studio One recording studio and the formation of The Skatalites. On August 5, 1962, Jamaica finally gained independence from 300 years of British rule. Immediately after independence, Jamaica faced severe poverty and deep inequality, but the explosion of energy among the Jamaican people brought about by independence was genuine. News footage from that time captured the excitement and enthusiasm of well-dressed crowds, and the boldness and exhilaration of the ska music that was rising throughout the island became the perfect soundtrack for this era. In December 1963, just a year after independence, Coxsone Dodd opened Studio One, and six months later, in June 1964, the supergroup The Skatalites was formed. Young and emerging producer Philip Justin Yap switched most of his production activities to this recording room at Studio One, recording many of The Skatalites' famous songs. He also recorded numerous excellent instrumental tracks using a small brass section, featuring members of The Skatalites and crediting the songwriters and arrangers. Along with Coxsone's own recordings, these works produced for Justin's Top Deck and Tuneico capture the members of The Skatalites performing at their in the unique atmosphere of Studio One, serving as a valuable record of an important moment in Jamaican cultural history marked by the birth of Studio One recording studio and the formation of the resilient Skatalites.
