Before cell phones and digital alarms, there was a mysterious device called an alarm clock, with two bells mounted on top that were struck by a vibrating hammer. You'd wind the clock with a ratchet key, set the alarm hand to the time you wanted to wake up, and once the hour hand caught up to the alarm hand, the bells would ring continuously until you turned it off or threw it against the wall! (There was one snooze option). Can you believe such an amazing, simple, and mysterious mechanism existed?
