A direct sequel to the previous film, "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla." One year after Godzilla's attack, Godzilla and the mechanical dragon Mechagodzilla once again face off in Tokyo. Furthermore, Mothra, the guardian deity of Infant Island, arrives, and a fierce battle unfolds with the future of Earth at stake.
Perhaps due to the film's 91-minute running time, the drama is lacking in detail, the depiction of human relationships lacks depth, and the director is known for sticking to superficial interactions, but this time the special effects team, led by Asada Eiichi, did a fantastic job. Mothra, flapping her large wings and soaring, has a realistic, lifelike quality. By skillfully using both digital technology and analog special effects, they were able to create powerful sequences, such as the encounter between Mothra and a fighter jet at the beginning, which made up for the drama. If we consider that a structure in which special effects scenes lead the entire film is the royal road to a monster movie, then this is a truly traditional monster movie! (Saito Morihiko)
