"Don Giovanni" in a lush forest. Gut's brilliant direction shines in the Vienna production at the Salzburg Festival. With Japanese subtitles! Klaus Gut's "Don Giovanni," the second of the Da Ponte trilogy at the Salzburg Festival, is now available on Blu-ray. The setting is a lush, dark forest. Don Giovanni, usually portrayed as a cool seducer, is seriously injured by a bullet in the opening fight with the Commendatore and is in agony throughout the performance. Meanwhile, Donna Anna is having an affair with Don Giovanni, even going so far as to lie to Don Ottavio to hide it. Zerlina is more than just a little devil; she is a femme fatale, and in the duet in which she ties up Leporello, a unique element of the Vienna version, she seems to enjoy tormenting him. Gut seems to be trying to reveal the innermost nature of his characters, hidden within their rationality, in the wilds of the forest. The play ends with their descent into Hell. Don Giovanni is played by British baritone Maltman. He gives an impressive performance in the unique title role, a character who is constantly suffering from pain. Leporello is played by Schrott, a handsome bass from Uruguay. He is a perfect fit for the thug-like Leporello. In addition, the popular German soprano, Don Dasch,
The cast includes some of the finest contemporary voices, including Anna Anna, the American tenor Polenzani, who is also active at the Met, Donna Elvira by the wildly popular Mozart soprano Röschmann, Zerlina by the Russian-born Szurlina, who achieved great success as Gilda in London's "Rigoletto," Esposito's Masetto, who sang Figaro in Gut's Japan tour of "The Marriage of Figaro," and the venerable bassist Kocherga. De Billy brings the Vienna Philharmonic to life, making this a musically satisfying performance.
