Kyo-yaki (Kiyomizu-yaki) is one of Kyoto's most representative traditional crafts. Its name is said to derive from the many kilns, including those of Kiyomizu Rokubei and Takahashi Michihachi, located around Gojozaka, the approach to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. The hand-painted designs have a three-dimensional quality not found in printed pieces, and the construction and designs are characteristically Kyoto. As these pieces are handmade and hand-painted, slight variations in size, color, and pattern may occur.
