Global environmental issues, terrorism, regional conflicts, anti-social incidents, economic crises, corporate failures... Following the end of the Cold War, the world and Japan were supposed to usher in a "21st century of hope," but contrary to expectations, they have been hit by a number of major troubles.
In such a situation, how should the world as a whole, or nations and companies, respond? And how can we change the way each individual thinks and acts to solve these problems? Humanity's wisdom will be put to the test.
So, from the mid-1990s through the 2000s, Kazuo Inamori, one of Japan's leading business leaders and honorary chairman of Kyocera, and Takeshi Umehara, one of the leading intellectuals of his time and philosopher (who passed away in January 2019), engaged in an ongoing debate about the state of modern civilization. From these insights, we have offered Japanese people insightful and easy-to-understand hints for solving these problems.
This book is a compilation of three dialogues that represent the crystallization of their wisdom: "Return to Philosophy" (published September 1995), "Discussing a New Philosophy" (published January 2003), and "Philosophy that Saves Humanity" (published January 2009). Each book has made an impact on its respective era and society since its publication, becoming a classic work that has garnered the support of many readers.
Unfortunately, however, the issues they addressed in their three books—such as "solving global environmental problems," "creating a highly ethical capitalism," "reconstructing the meaning of work," "shifting from a monotheistic to a polytheistic worldview," and "reviving the moral sense of the Japanese people"—have yet to be resolved.
Even now, major changes on a global scale are occurring daily in human society, and a mountain of problems that need to be solved are upon us.
Therefore, we once again felt it was important to present a clear path forward for our current society, which is heading astray, and so we decided to proceed with the publication of "Return to Philosophy: The Complete Edition." We hope that readers will once again find inspiration in the wisdom of these two authors as they work to rebuild a world and Japan that is "full of hope and happiness.
