The brilliant masterpiece in the history of Japanese shojo manga, "The Rose of Versailles," was serialized in Weekly Margaret (Shueisha) from 1972 to 1973. Set in 18th century France, this historical epic tale of love and struggle centers on Queen Marie Antoinette and Oscar, the youngest daughter of an aristocratic family but raised as a boy, alongside a cast of fascinating characters like André and Fersen, set against the backdrop of the tumultuous times leading up to the French Revolution. Its grand scale and splendid, romantic content, unlike anything seen in shojo manga up until that point, earned it enthusiastic support from readers and made it a huge hit. Not only was it adapted into a stage play by the Takarazuka Revue in 1974, enjoying an unprecedented run, but in 1979 it was also made into a live-action film directed by renowned director Jacques Demy and filmed on location in France. The TV anime version, also produced in 1979, was hugely popular overseas. The work transcended gender and age barriers, sparking a nationwide social phenomenon known as the "Rose of Versailles," and remains beloved by countless fans even in the 21st century as an enduring classic.
