Introduction

About the Artist
Conductor: Shuichi Toma / Choir: Osaka Heinrich Schütz Chamber Choir Devoted to the music of Bach since his time at Osaka College of Music, Shuichi Toma honed his skills as an organist and basso continuo player, and founded the Osaka Collegium Musicum in 1975. In 1976, he founded the chamber orchestra "Ensemble Schütz" (now Sinfonia Collegium Osaka). Around the same time, he developed new vocal techniques, new management methods, and new choral methods, and founded the Osaka Collegium Musicum Choir the following year in 1977. Since then, as its permanent conductor, he has developed the choir and orchestra into a unique organization, earning high acclaim both at home and abroad. In addition to serving as a judge for various competitions, he also serves as music director, technical advisor, and musical advisor for choirs in Kansai, Nagoya, and Tokyo. In 2014, he was awarded the 49th Osaka City Citizen's Award in the Cultural Merit category. The Osaka Heinrich Schütz Chamber Choir, the core of the Osaka Collegium Musicum Choir, is composed of members selected annually through auditions. The choir continues to perform actively throughout Japan, including more than 400 monthly concerts, two to three regular concerts per year (at Izumi Hall), and performances in Kyoto, Tokyo, and Nagoya. Their repertoire spans a wide range, from Renaissance music to contemporary music. Their vibrant performances, based on cutting-edge research, have been praised in various newspapers for their clear harmonies and compelling message, even during five tours in Germany and Europe. He also led and musically directed choirs in Italy in 2010 and 2017, and in Spain in 2013 (invited to the Mantova Chamber Music Festival in 2017), where they received enthusiastic acclaim. He has released 33 CDs to date and has been nominated for the Record Geijutsu Academy Award several times. He has received the Osaka Cultural Festival Encouragement Award in 1996, the Excellence Award in the Music Division of the Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival in 1998, the ABC Music Award "Crystal" Award in 2001, and the Nagai Award from the Kansai Choral Federation in 2003.
