■About Firefly Glass
A popular souvenir item in Okinawa. Their deep blue color evokes the Okinawan ocean. Hotaru Glass is a perforated glass bead crafted using the same burnerwork technique as glass beads.
Artisans melt each colored glass and roll it around an iron core. The molten glass, like a syrup syrup, is then layered with silver leaf, creating a beautiful color using a special technique.
Hotaru glass, a type of glass bead not native to Okinawa, is a popular Okinawan souvenir, but there is no clear record of when it first became popular. However, it gained popularity in the late 1980s as an alternative to rare coral products, and its deep-sea-like color is said to have captivated tourists.
