Coach was founded in 1941 as an American leather goods brand by Miles and Lillian Kahn. It began as a family-run workshop in Manhattan's SoHo district in New York, where six skilled leather artisans with handed-down skills handcrafted their products. Inspired by baseball gloves, which develop a unique character with use, the company's skilled craftsmen handcrafted a new leather material. In 1985, it became a subsidiary of Sara Lee Corporation, and has since expanded into the comprehensive apparel business. In 2002, Coach Ginza opened in Ginza. In 2010, the company opened its first flagship store in mainland China in Shanghai. The brand continues to expand today as a luxury brand.
