About the Artist
George Georgescu (1887-1964) was one of Romania's greatest conductors, serving as music director of the George Enesco Philharmonic from 1920 to 1944 and from 1954 to 1964. From 1918 to 1920, he served as assistant conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, where he studied directly under Arthur Nikisch. He was influenced by Nikisch, and shared a classical performance style with his contemporary, Boult, that placed the violins on both wings. This studio recording was made between 1961 and 1962. At the time, Romania was under the protection of the Soviet Union, and even in the Soviet Union, stereo recordings had not yet been fully adopted. It is a source of amazement and joy that the complete Beethoven works were preserved in such high-quality stereo recordings. While this complete collection was previously available on CD by DANTE/LYS, in 2012, we transcribed the master tapes from the commercially available LP and released the first official CD from the master tapes (ERT1001, out of print), which garnered a great response. After being out of print for a long time, we have now returned to the master, remastered it, and restored it with refined sound quality using UHQCD. Georgescu's performance, including the "Pastoral," is ultra-fast and full of song, on a par with Kleiber's. His sense of rhythm is clear. Every part is lively and captivating. The Enescu Philharmonic also has a truly rustic flavor, and the nostalgic sound of the woodwinds is also moving. The "Choral" is sung in Romanian. For those interested in research, the revised score, reminiscent of Mengelberg, will be of interest.
