The Savanna name was not used overseas, and the car was given the name RX-3. The RE derives its power from the rotational movement of an irregular piston called a rice ball-shaped rotor, instead of the up and down movement of a cylindrical piston in a normal reciprocating engine, and was synonymous with Mazda's advanced technology at the time. The RE was compact and easy to generate power, and the Savanna was highly acclaimed as a base car for competition vehicles. Symbolizing this is the fact that the Savanna broke down the stronghold of the Skyline GT-R, which had been invincible in Japanese touring car races from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, and eventually drove it out in 1972 (the GT-R withdrew from the sport). With this image in mind, it became popular for ordinary Savanna users to customize their cars to look like race cars, but at the time, the works overfenders that race cars were equipped with to accommodate thick tires were illegal, and so the car also had an outlaw vibe. For Hot Wheels, the car is finished in a color scheme inspired by the Liberty Walk car, which was customized to look like a machine by Yoshimi Katayama, a well-known RE driver.
