There is nothing special about the taste of these deep blue berries, harvested from a very common evergreen. If you’ve ever enjoyed gin, juniper berries are probably the most well-known flavoring used in gin and other liqueurs. Juniper berries have a spicy/sweet flavor with a hint of pine. Juniper berries are versatile in cooking. They are delicious in stews, soups, and with meats and vegetables. Add them to marinades or sauces and brush them on meats before grilling or sautéing. Juniper berries used for cooking are riper and have a slightly different, stronger flavor. *Ethylene oxide (ETO) is a chemical sterilization method commonly used in the spice industry, but is never used by Frontier Co-op.

How to use: To enhance the flavor of stews, sauces, and marinades, try substituting four berries for one bay leaf.
