.....................................................................................
Description: Perennial herbaceous plant with an elongated horizontal rhizome; erect and simple stem that can reach 2.5 m in height.
Bluish-green leaves, linear, sheathing and parallel veins, 8-25 mm wide, the upper ones can reach the top of the inflorescence.
Inflorescence formed by two spikes (swords) superimposed monoecious: the female one (15-25 cm) lower, cylindrical, contiguous to the upper male inflorescence which is narrower, whitish and conical, of more or less equal length to the female spike or shorter than it.
Male flowers with numerous groups of stamens surrounded by short bristles, with 1-3 basifixed anthers of 2-3 mm; the very small female flowers, tightly packed around the stem, without bracteoles, with a perianth formed by thin bristles; long-pedunculated ovary with spatulate stigma, exceeding the bristles. The brown color of the female ear is due to the brown stigmas when ripe.
Infructescence in the form of a reddish-brown spike, cylindrical, formed by thousands of fusiform cypselae of about 1-1.5 mm, longitudinally furrowed, with a pericarp not adhering to the seed and dehiscent at the end: the seeds are dispersed by the transparent bristles of the perianth which form a sort of parachute.
Pollination: anemophilous
Dissemination: It begins in autumn and ends the following spring.
