Product introduction
Percussion Magician Bonjo, and the legendary “On-U Sound” project by British Dub General Adrian Sherwood, the latest work by African Head Charge for the first time in 12 years!!!
'I think we had the best results ever with this album' - Adrian Sherwood
African Head Charge, the legendary “On-U Sound” project formed around percussionist Bonjo Iyabingi Noah and producer Adrian Sherwood known as the pioneer of UK dub, has returned to “On-U Sound” with their first new album in 12 years!
The title is “Trip To Bolgatanga,” and founding member Bonjo Aiyabingi Noah led the recording, and his ally Adrian Sherwood, who has run the group together, was once again involved in directing the production.
Regarding the fact that there was a large gap between the albums, Bonjo states the following. “After 12 years, I spent time with my family in Ghana, and I continued to create. I'm sure you'll understand that I still have a lot of questions to ask in the world. I wanted to work during this period of my life, but I also wanted to cherish my time with my family. While spending every day pleasantly, I also dedicated myself to my creations. After all, if you have something to be happy about, it's something that makes you even more positive about your creations, and the greatest happiness is being with your family.”
It is true that the sound of this album reminds me of African Head Charge masterpieces of yesteryear such as “My Life In A Hole In The Ground” and “Songs Of Praise,” but it is a mistake to assume that their music has already stopped evolving. A famous percussion player, he continues his words. “Whether it's playing drums or singing a chant like chanting, it takes time to do it. I've been all over Ghana to meet drummers. Every tribe, such as Fante, Akim, Ga, and Bolgatanga, each has a different drum culture. I'm trying to learn as much as I can and combine them into one form. This is similar to cooking. When you mix all the ingredients, such as yam (yam), banana, and pumpkin, the final seasoning applied to it is essential. That's how I perceive music. If you gather various elements and taste them, you'll say, “OK, this is a good flavor. The words “Nice, this sounds good” come up. This is the very reason African Head Charge exists. If you pursue all kinds of combinations and take them to Adrian, he'll help you create even more new things.” (1/2)

producer Adrian Sherwood is of the same opinion. “I've always been selecting materials suitable for African head charges and then finishing them to perfection while enjoying overdubbing and mixing. We've always had a good working relationship until now, but I think we were able to get the best results in history with this album.”
Even though the group has been active for over 40 years, there is an impression that members of a large family who share the essence of music have returned to the scene on this album. The multi-instrumentalist Skip McDonald and Doug Wimbisch, who works with him at Tuckhead, have demonstrated their power by participating in various tracks. Drummer Perry Merius, who was once involved in African Head Charge in the early 90s, has added heavy orthodox rhythms to the three songs. Don't overlook the fact that many fresh faces have been added here. Paul Booth, Richard Roswell, and David Fulwood perform wind and lead instruments. Russ Manrange and Samuel Bell glitter on the keyboard. The guitar is Vince Black. Furthermore, percussion by Shadou Rock Adu, Mensa Aka, Akanuoe Angela, Emmanuel Okine, etc., strings by Ivan 'Cheloman' Hassy, and powerful singing voices by Ghetto Priest are added. Also, as a special guest, King Isoba, a master of the traditional instrument Korogo, participated with vocals and performed a skillful performance of the traditional 2-string lute. Whereas in past albums, essences collected from all over the world were mixed together, African Head Charge has only one place in mind on the new album. “A Trip To Bolgatanga” is a musical journey around northern Ghana, which is Bonjo's current living base. This is a record of a fantastic journey, and it symbolizes the scenery that appears, with roaring bass sounds, varied wind instruments, effects that cut extra sounds, loud wah pedal effects, voodoo dance music that seems to be obsessed with something, synthesized sounding sounds, conga rhythms, and many layers of electronic instrument effects, blues Woodwind instruments and funky organ sounds that make you feel the influence have been added. As is the case with all “On-U Sound” works, no matter how many times you listen to them, there are new discoveries about fine details every time. If you don't listen to this sound with a large-scale sound system, you won't be able to understand its true value, and when that happens, no matter what opponent competes, you'll be knocked down without being able to compete.
