book introduction
Language is a vessel containing culture, clothes worn with culture, and a mirror that reflects culture.
Is the soybean paste stew savory? It is for Koreans. But how does soybean paste stew taste for foreigners? They say it just smells salty and strange. If you are a foreigner who has never eaten soybean paste stew, you will not even have basic information about its taste. Nevertheless, in many Korean textbooks, soybean paste stew pictures are used to explain the taste of savory. While teaching Korean language and Korean culture as a foreign language like this, there are many cases where the learners are basically not considered. There are many books about culture. However, if the contents of cultural education are selected in the teaching position, learners from other cultures become lost in front of their eyes. While experiencing such an experience, I wished there was a book that first considers what Korean language learners in front of me are most curious about, whether there is any knowledge they have missed in their learning history, and what they have not been able to learn in the local educational environment. Above all, I always wondered what kind of English the learners didn't use even though they knew a lot of Korean. A cultural education book that encourages students to challenge the use of language with confidence is what is needed. Language is born in culture, and the language created in that way embodies the culture of the society. There is no question that culture and language are inseparable. If so, any language can be shared only after understanding the lives and thoughts of the people who use it. How do Koreans call each other? Why is it that animals and plants are alluded to? What is the way of life and thinking of Koreans that the proverb shows? Why did the word become a proverb? Can we read Korean stereotypes from special Korean expressions and know the inner truth from emotional expressions? Can't we express the state perceived by sight, taste, and touch in a delicious way like Koreans do? In this book, we want to empathize with the thoughts and lifestyles of Koreans through Korean expressions that learners are curious about.
