Adrienne Lecouvreur, a real-life actress with the Comédie-Française in the first half of the 18th century, was born into a poor family but attracted attention for her natural beauty and expressiveness. During her more than ten years with the troupe, she is said to have performed in over 100 plays (22 of which were premieres) a total of 1,884 times. Her love affair with Count Moritz of Saxony was also well known, but there are various theories as to the cause of her death (including poisoning and natural causes), and her dramatic life inspired Skriep and Lecje to write a play that became the basis for this opera. This opera, "Adriana Lecouvreur," is a masterpiece by Cilea (1866-1950). The original novel originally had a rather complicated plot, but librettist Colautti rewrote it into an easy-to-understand drama, successfully portraying the lyrical atmosphere of the 18th century and the passion of the heroine, a proud actress. When it premiered in Milan in 1902, it was a huge success, starring big stars of the time such as Enrico Caruso and Angelica Pandolfini. For the next 10 years, it was such a hot topic that it was performed not only in Europe but also at the Metropolitan Opera.
Both heroines require a mature and experienced presence, and Carossi and Cornetti's performances here are impeccable in both presence and voice. Antoniozzi's role as Misione, who continues to yearn for Adriana, is also moving. Of course, Alvarez, with his velvety voice, is outstanding here as well, and his final performance will remain in your memory forever.
