[A swift and powerful anti-tank vanguard] The M18 Hellcat was a tank destroyer developed by the U.S. Army during World War II to counter powerful German tanks like the Tiger and Panther. It features an open-top turret with an emphasis on reconnaissance capabilities and a powerful 76mm tank gun. To conserve space within the turret, the main gun bay was rotated 45 degrees around the barrel. The compact, lightweight chassis also featured an automatic transmission and, a first for an American tank, torsion bar suspension. A rear-mounted, nine-cylinder star-shaped gasoline engine allowed it to reach a top speed of over 80 km/h, making it the fastest tracked vehicle of World War II. Hellcat production began in July 1943, and it saw its debut on the Italian front in 1944. It subsequently saw service in Northwest Europe and the Pacific, where its high speed and firepower combined to defeat German tanks with hit-and-run tactics. Its role as the vanguard of anti-tank combat contributed to the victory of the American military.
